"They like me, they really like me"

One step closer to ordination...today, I was officially called by the congregation.
The past couple of weeks have been funny, because I have fielded dozens of questions: "Were you just an interim?" "Are you leaving already?" "Things not work out?"
I did realize the danger of being at the church in a lay capcity...they got two months free of me, and coulda voted me down today. Thankfully, with the Thanksgiving weekend, I think my detractors were all out of town.
The other entertaining piece of information is that our 11am service is sent to the surrounding area via live broadcast on CBS, which supposedly goes out to thousands of viewers in the Piedmont region. Today's service was on the shorter side, so that means the congregational meeting was probably broadcast out there. Nothing like having random people hearing the financial figures of your terms of call on live TV!

Devotion: Deep Breathing

As many of us will be stuck in traffic today for Thanksgiving, or waiting in a long line of people in the airport, I thought it would be important to remind us to take a deep breath. We often become so consumed with what is going on in our lives that we forget that the person who just cut us off in traffic, or the person asking a million questions at the ticket counter is also a child of God. Maybe squeezing that obligatory trip to see the family, or putting together an expansive feast for relatives who will come knocking on your door Thursday morning, is not the relaxing holiday it should be.
Therefore, it is my prayer that you may be able to sneak away from the chaos for five minutes, and take a deep breath.
Why a deep breath, you may ask? It’s not just some new-age guru technique, but it is scriptural, for the Hebrew word for Spirit is also the word for breath.
In Genesis 2 we read about God breathing life into humanity; Psalm 105 says “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord;” Isaiah tells us that God has given breath to the people upon the earth.
For me this is a great reminder of the closeness of God; with each exhale and inhale God gives and sustains my life and that closeness is also true for that person in front of me in line.
Let us be thankful this week for the breath of life God has given us, and seek ways to share that thankfulness with those around us.

What a weekend

Ah, I have finally been able to settle in. For the past few months--really since graduation last May, life has been busy with job searching, surgeries, moving, moving again, moving again, starting a job...yada yada yada.
But the past weekend was the quiet that I have needed to catch my breath and regroup. Thursday night Lindsay went out for a ladies night leaving Ellie and I to find for ourselves. Meaning a bath, dinner and a bedtime story.
Friday was spent raking the yard--that's right I have a yard to rake.
Saturday was a day in the gym.
And Sunday was teaching two Sunday School classes, but then I got to sit in worship. It was the first time in 7 straight weeks that I was not assisting in worship. Unfortunately, it looks like the Panthers season is over, and it is time now to move onto Davidson Basketball.

Here are some photos from our new neighborhood's halloween block party, and Ellie starting to crawl:
