Devotion: What did you say?

James 3:10-11   “Out of the same mouth come praising and cursing.  My brothers and sisters this should not be.  Can both fresh water and bitter water flow from the same spring?”

Live on GMA last week, the lovable Tom Hanks was asked to embody his recent role for the interview.  In doing so, he accidentally dropped the F-Bomb on live television without the 7 second delay (who would every think the boy from BIG would need a 7 second delay?).  It was interesting that when Hanks went into his acting method, curse words flowed easily out of his mouth as if without a filter.

During Wednesday Worship we considered the challenge laid out by James that we need to watch what we say, because words have the power to tear us apart or to build us up.  In a world of digital communication, it is easy to type and “say” things that are flippant, disrespectful and ultimately destructive without having to have face-to-face communication and relationship to see the impact of those words.  In contrast, we discover that the Word, Jesus, shares with us are words of hope, healing and transformation: one that builds us up.

As followers of Christ, it poses a challenging question, are we sharing words that are filled with bitterness, resentment, anger and hurt—or are we sharing words that build one another up and point to Jesus?

What words flow the easiest from your mouth?
