Devotion: Act Like You Mean It

"I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord.  They will be my people, and I will be their God." Jeremiah 24:7

On Wednesdays, we have been gathering around God's Word in the book of Jeremiah for worship.  It's a challenging book of the Bible because we read about God's frustration with His people, to such an extreme that He takes away the things He'd promised them and scatters them around the region.  But, among that story are these small verses of grace.

Even though the world swirling around them is scary, unknown and dangerous, He promised that He will give them a heart to know Him.  On the surface it does not seem that God loves them anymore; they have lost everything. But in that space of uncertainty, God promises to be a personal God.

We all have been given a heart to know God, the question is do we act like this is true?

CS Lewis in Mere Christianity has a great quote about loving your neil or, but I believe it can be translated to loving your spouse, yourself and even God.

"Don't waste time bothering whether you "love" your neighbor; act as if you did.  Its soon as we do this we find one of the great secrets.  When you are behaving as if you loved some you will presently come to love him."

God has given you a heart to love him, are you behaving as if that were true?  How might you behave like that even while feeling isolated, alone, nervous, and afraid (like the Israelites in exile)?  Who could you show the love of Christ to today?
