Pop(?) Music

Last week I was driving into town and heard the most disturbing song on the radio:
"I kissed a girl."

Perhaps it is because I have a daughter now, that I was more bothered then I typically am by pop-culture. What I found disturbing about the song was that the music is rather catchy and soft. But if you listen to the words you hear not only the sexual experimentation of a teenager, but also a self-motivated attitude:
  • "You are my experimental game"
  • "I am not in love tonight"

Granted our American culture's sexual repression has lead to these fantasized outlets (including America's internet addiction). But the lack of intelligent conversation around a song like "I kissed a girl"'s appropriateness for local radio broadcast and the blatant explotation, necessity of alcohol to lower inabitions, and selfishness of this song shows our laize faire approach to sexual conversations.

The church, when she tries to speak into such matters, is quickly dismissed as prudish and antiquated. However, I find that this song is bothersome for reasons beyond it's bisexual exploration--as a matter of fact, I wish not to address that as much as the inward focused content of this song.

Clearly this song is targeted at teenagers (tone, language, and content) and it is not hard to imagine a teenage girl unsure of who she is seeking to impress her boyfriend by mimicing this exploration, while a group of guys would hoot and hollar at any party that this song were to be played at. It only enhances a teenagers sense of entitlement, manipulation, us

This was never the way I planned
    Not my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
    Lost my discretion
It's not what, I'm used to
    Just wanna try you on
    I'm curious for you
    Caught my attention

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
    It felt so wrong
    It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
    I liked it

No, I don't even know your name
    It doesn't matter
    Your my experimental game
    Just human nature
It's not what, good girls do
    Not how they should behave
    My head gets so confused
    Hard to obey

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
    It felt so wrong
    It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
    I liked it

Us girls we are so magical
Soft skin, red lips, so kissable
    Hard to resist so touchable
    Too good to deny it
Ain't no big deal, it's innocent

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
    It felt so wrong
    It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
    I liked it

here's some irony for you, courtesy of Wikipedia:

    Early life

Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California, USA. The middle child of two pastors, she grew up listening to gospel music and singing in church. After Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp signed Katy on their label Red Hill Records, she released her first CD as a Christian gospel CD in 2001 under the name Katy Hudson.[2]

Just in case there was any confusion - Katy Perry is the recording artist of "I kissed a Girl"
