Building a Foundation

1 Corinthians 3:11-12
"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is."

In running, there is a concept called "building the base." In order to compete in a long distance race you have to have built a strong foundation before formal training begins. Like high altitude mountain climbing, you have to be acclimated before the real work can begin. If this is true for our physical bodies, why should we be surprised for our spiritual bodies as well?

There is a spiritual foundation in each of our hearts--Jesus Christ. At the root of each of us is a desire to uncover this foundation. It's story is about a God who created the world, witnessed as His creation went haywire and squandered every gift we've been given, so in one large dramatic act sent His Son to demonstrate the depth of his love by pursuing the lost, the least and the last in order that through His death on the cross the lost, least, and last would become found, most, and first.

If we try to build on this foundation a life of self-absorbtion, theuroputic-numbness, greedy-self-centeredness--it will come crashing down like a house of cards no matter how gorgeous. The real work is reshaping the things God as blessed us with--whether gold or straw--to mold and fit upon His foundation with integrity, humility, discipline and obedience.

How might you begin building this foundation?
